Alex-Leigh Ranch breeds quality Missouri Fox Trotters and other gaited horses for show, pleasure and trail riding. We have an exceptional stallion at stud and several well-bred brood mares. We aim to produce 5-10 foals a year. We focus on producing sound, conformationally correct, naturally gaited horses with good foundation bloodlines. We place a high value on temperament. We imprint all foals at birth and handle the horses daily. We routinely offer weanlings through well-started 3 year-olds for sale.
We have over thirty years experience breeding and handling horses. Dawn grew up training and showing American Saddlebreds. She worked her way through The Ohio State University as an exercise jockey, riding Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses at Beulah Park in Ohio. Dawn has a Bachelor of Science, Animal Science degree and John is working on his. We continue to attend seminars, trade shows, and educational venues to remain current on horse production and training methods. To the extent possible during a twenty-year Army career we owned, bred and showed horses. We moved to the heart of Missouri Fox Trotter country in 2002 and were quickly impressed by Fox Trotter’s performance, attitude and reasonable prices.
We are ably assisted by Meghan Engleson, the young lady shown in several of the pictures. Meghan grew up riding and is a natural horse-women. Meghan is a freshman at Southwest Missouri State University and has worked for us for the past three years. She starts most of our foals and has help set-up horses for the show ring.
Our primary focus is on producing trail and pleasure horses. We also participate in numerous trail rides throughout the year. We show lightly in Missouri’s South Central Horse Show Association, the Breeder’s Cup, the Missouri Fox Trotter Horse Breeders Association (MFTHBA) Spring Futurity and MFTHBA Show and Celebration.
